Three starting points
Where are you on the fractional CMO path?
Partners join from three starting points: thinking about going fractional, between roles, or already fractional. About 55% had never run their own business before joining. About 45% were already consulting or doing fractional work. Partners from both backgrounds are closing deals.
55% had never run their own business45% were already consulting or fractional
Thinking about going fractional as a CMO
You’ve led marketing for years. You know how to build a brand, a pipeline, and a team. What you haven’t done is package that experience into something a CEO can buy from you. You don’t need a big audience, a finished website, or a year of runway to start. You don’t have to quit your job, either. Some partners get certified, define their niche and offers, and start conversations while they’re still employed.
Between CMO roles
Maybe it was a layoff, an acquisition, or a role that ended sooner than planned. Being between roles is a common place to start. The real question is whether you want to bridge the gap until the next full-time job or build a fractional business that lasts. If it’s the second, there’s a better way than taking whatever consulting project comes along: a clear niche, a few proven offers, and a system for turning your network into conversations.
Already a fractional CMO
You have clients and retainers. You’re also custom-scoping every deal, getting pulled into execution, and waiting on referrals. You’re not starting over. Your clients, your retainers, and your frameworks stay yours. The GTM OS adds a repeatable business model around the work you already do.
The real problem
Why fractional CMOs get stuck
Most fractional CMOs aren’t short on talent. They’re short on a business model. These are the problems that come up most often.
PROBLEM 01
Everyone has the fractional CMO title now
The title used to set you apart. Now thousands of profiles say “fractional CMO,” and one résumé reads like the next. A CEO needs a reason to choose you that isn’t your last job.
PROBLEM 02
You can market anything except yourself
You’ve built demand for every company you’ve worked for. Selling yourself to a CEO who has never heard of you is a different skill, and most marketing leaders have never had to practice it.
PROBLEM 03
Feast or famine between clients
When work comes only from referrals, the pipeline stops when the referrals do. Most fractional CMOs don’t have a repeatable way to create the next conversation.
PROBLEM 04
Custom-scoping every engagement
Every proposal starts from a blank page. Scope creeps, you get pulled into execution, and your income is capped by your calendar.
PROBLEM 05
Doing it alone
No team and no peers. Nobody to review a proposal or talk through pricing before it goes out.
The system
Keep the CMO title. Add a system CEOs recognize.
The GTM Operating System™ is GTM Partners’ framework for how a company runs go-to-market: eight pillars that sit above every function, from marketing and sales to customer success and RevOps. For a fractional CMO, it does two things. It gives your marketing expertise an executive-level structure a CEO can buy, and it gives you products to sell instead of hours.
The flagship executive engagement. Five working sessions, or a one-day onsite, that diagnose where growth is breaking and set the next 90-day plan. It’s a low-risk first purchase for a CEO who doesn’t know you yet, and it often leads to larger work.
Product 2
GTM OS Pillars
4 to 6 week strategic engagements, each solving one defined growth problem, such as ICP, positioning, pipeline, or retention.
Product 3
GTM Projects
Custom-scoped, hands-on work built around your proven strengths, such as ongoing marketing leadership, demand generation, positioning, or product marketing. It can be a retainer or a defined project, on its own or alongside strategy work. Your current fractional CMO retainers fit here.
Product 4
Workshops
Paid sessions and executive speaking offers that open larger advisory work.
“A three-month fractional engagement is too much of a commitment when we haven’t established trust yet. GTM Planning is 30 days… such a low-risk offer makes it a great wedge and an opportunity to test mutual fit.”
CEOs hire a fractional CMO to grow the business, not only the marketing function. A certification in a recognized go-to-market methodology lets you lead conversations about sales, customer success, and RevOps with the same confidence you bring to brand and demand.
“Being a GTM OS Certified Partner gives me credibility in areas outside my deepest expertise.”
The CMO’s role in go-to-market is the galvanizer: the leader who creates a consistent brand experience across the buyer journey, treats revenue as seriously as sales does, and turns the lead funnel into a revenue flywheel. Fractional CMOs on the GTM OS bring that role to every client.
Your frameworks plug in. Nothing gets replaced.
Already have your own frameworks? Keep them. The GTM OS sits above every function, so your method plugs in instead of being replaced. Partners also get a full commercial license to use GTM Partners frameworks and workshops with their clients.
The community
Who’s in the GTM Partners community
GTM Partners’ certified partners are experienced go-to-market leaders, and many are CMOs at their core: former CMOs and VPs of Marketing, interim CMOs, and marketing leaders who have spent years building brands, pipelines, and teams. Some come straight from a full-time role. Others have run fractional practices for years and joined for better products and more leverage. The community includes Alan Gonsenhauser, a 12-time CMO and former Forrester/SiriusDecisions advisor, and Sue Foley, who spent 30 years as a CMO. In 2026, 71% of partner deals were outside SaaS, in professional services, manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, education, and more.
Why fractional CMOs join
To lead with a methodology, not a résumé.
“I decided to become a GTM OS Certified Partner because it’s evidence over opinion.”
Experienced fractionals join to make their practices more repeatable and less dependent on custom-scoped work.
To stop doing it alone.
“I’ve had a great lifestyle, working with six to seven clients every year. But one thing I hadn’t had was a community. That’s been a huge value of GTM Partners.”
The community is practical, not a cohort with homework. Partners join monthly $1M Mastermind calls, weekly coaching calls, and weekly delivery office hours where they bring a client problem and leave with a plan. A private Slack group of 160+ operators is where partners share progress, trade referrals, team up on deals, and pressure-test proposals. During the 10-Week Challenge, partners follow a daily relationship-building rhythm and share their progress with the group each week.

“I made more in my first full year of fractional and advisory work than I did as a full-time CMO—and I have more time to think, strategize, and have a life! Being a certified GTM partner absolutely helped me close deals in two meetings, increased the size of the deal, and gave clients the confidence that I have a proven framework that has worked for hundreds of companies.”

“I came into this thinking I already knew all about Brand, Demand, and Pitch/Proposal/Close, but I learn something new every time I attend a coaching call. What I have learned about leveraging LinkedIn to market myself could honestly be an entire book.”

Can I start fractional CMO work before I leave my job?
Yes. Some partners get certified, define their niche, and have early conversations while they’re still employed. The free course shows what it takes, so you can decide on your own timeline.
I’m between CMO roles. Should I go fractional or wait for a full-time job?
It depends on what you want next. If you only need income until the next CMO role, consulting projects can bridge the gap. If you want a business you own, the GTM OS gives you a niche, offers, and a system for creating demand, so you aren’t starting from zero each time. About 55% of GTM Partners’ certified partners had never run their own business before joining.
Can a fractional CMO earn more than a full-time CMO?
Some do. Certified partner Sarah Allen-Short says she made more in her first full year of fractional and advisory work than she did as a full-time CMO. Results depend on your niche, your offers, and the work you put into building demand.
How do fractional CMOs find their first clients?
Mostly through people who already know them. 59% of certified partners’ deals came from their own existing networks. The work is making your expertise clear to that network: what you do, who you help, and what you sell. The Brand System and the 10-Week Challenge are built for that.
How do I stand out from other fractional CMOs?
Lead with a methodology and defined products instead of your résumé. GTM Partners’ certified partners sell GTM Planning, GTM OS Pillars, GTM Projects, and Workshops on a framework CEOs recognize, which gives a CEO a clear reason to choose you.
Is a GTM certification worth it for a fractional CMO?
For many partners, yes, because it changes how they sell. Certification gives you a recognized methodology, turnkey products, and credibility in conversations beyond marketing, such as sales, customer success, and RevOps. It also takes real effort, especially early. It’s designed for someone building a business, not just adding a credential.
Should I join a fractional CMO firm or go independent?
There’s a third option. With GTM Partners you build your own business, under your own brand, with your own clients and pricing, and you get the methodology, products, coaching, and peer network that a firm would provide.
I already have my own frameworks. Do I have to use yours?
No. Keep your IP and your clients. The GTM OS sits above every function, so your frameworks plug in rather than being replaced.
Does GTM Partners give me leads?
No. The program gives you products, structure, and coaching, plus a listing in the GTM Marketplace where companies book certified operators. Building the business still takes active business development, and most deals come from partners’ own networks.
What’s the difference between a fractional CMO and an interim CMO?
A fractional CMO works part-time across several companies. An interim CMO fills a leadership role at one company for a set period, often during a transition. Many certified partners do both. Interim work can be one offer inside a fractional business you own.
Is this only for marketing leaders?
No. It’s built for fractional CMOs, VPs of Marketing, and heads of marketing, and the community also includes fractional CROs, Chief Sales Officers, RevOps leaders, product marketing leaders, and agencies. If you lead sales or revenue, see the page for fractional CROs and Chief Sales Officers. See the page for fractional CROs and Chief Sales Officers →
What does the GTM Partners program cost?
The individual Certified Partner first-year investment starts at $12K, and payment plans are available. Agency partnerships start at $35K. Partners who pay in full are eligible for the results guarantee: if you attend your coaching calls, complete the training, and finish the 10-Week Challenge, and don’t make $15K within 12 months, GTM Partners will refund your investment.
What happens after I take the free course?
If it fits, you can book a 1:1 with founders Sangram Vajre and Bryan Brown. Partners who join get certified, work with a dedicated coach, and follow the 30, 90, and 180-day path to their first or next clients.
